Fall 2021 landed with a massive slate and a clear divide: big franchise moves and a lot of originals trying different things. Demon Slayer's new TV arcs and Free!'s long-awaited movie were the season's obvious landmarks.
What stuck with me about fall 2021 was how it felt like a season of follow-ups that still had room to breathe. Demon Slayer's Mugen Train, Tsuzumi Mansion, and Asakusa arcs translated the franchise's cinematic energy back to TV — the action scenes kept their weight, and those quieter Asakusa character moments actually landed. The sword-and-heart stuff wasn't flashy for flashiness' sake; it had purpose.
Free!–the Final Stroke– Part 1 arrived as the sports anime moment, leaning hard into choreography and soundtrack so races felt personal. Sword Art Online -Progressive- Aria of the Starless Night gave the Aincrad retelling a slower, more methodical opening that rewarded fans who wanted detail. The Way of the Househusband Part 2 stuck to its deadpan humor and timing, while a clutch of originals from studios like Silver Link, Passione, and Studio Bind showed off interesting art choices and risk-taking. All in all, fall 2021 wasn't just volume — it was a season where a few big names set the tone and a bunch of smaller projects tried new angles and often paid off.
